The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - day 2

WEDNESDAY 12th
INCA Trail, day 2 climbing over the highest point of the trail.
A trail map at a passport check point before the climb.

Quite a short day today however due to the 1200m climb ahead of us to the 4200m saddle called Dead Woman's Pass we were a little anxious about how we would all cope.
At the end of the day everyone managed really well.  Lindsey, generally the slowest walker, has been given a new name by one of the Aussies.  "Turbo".  She still managed to walk each section in less than the time our guide said it would take us.
At the pass I climbed another 50m into a tarn basin to find a geocache.
What we have just walked up. Centre left is Rosie, the assistant guide.

Rather pleased to be at the top.

Some of our group at the saddle sign post.
The climb had some big stone steps which were challenging.
After the pass the terrain changed from open tussock to sub tropical rain forest.
The descent was quite steep in places with the same stone steps.
We arrived at our next camping area around 1 pm and were served lunch shortly afterwards.
Time now for a siesta and a short exploration before "happy hour" at 5.
Unlike yesterday where we couldn't see any of the other camping areas, today we are on terraces one above the other.
Another delicious three course dinner was served up at 6:30 finished with a delicious hot Pisco tea.  It tasted like a hot toddy made with whiskey, honey and lemon. We think that the Pisco alcohol is made from corn.

In bed now at 8pm to be woken again tomorrow at 5:30 with a hot cup of Munya (mint) tea.
